9/16/2010 UPDATE :
For all the people just joining the blog - welcome! Our dogs - Duke & Scarlett - had a beautiful litter of puppies and we are looking for good, forever homes for them. Scarlett is AKC registered and her great-grandpa was a champion agility dog. Duke is not registered but any vet can confirm that he is pure breed. Australian Shepherds are GREAT family, farm, agility, and service dogs. Both Duke & Scarlett's temperaments are wonderful. The puppies need to stay with mommy for roughly 8-10 weeks, so they can go to homes around mid- November. We are taking deposits down on puppies, and some are already claimed. They will be getting their tails docked tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday along with their shots. You can google search what kind of Aussie you like (red merle, blue merle, etc) to see roughly what the pups will look like when they get to be adults.

  3. Is there a reason why the puppies need to get their tails docked? I'm just wondering because I know nothing about this procedure.

  5. Eula, the main reason for docking the tail is for herding purposes. A lot of Aussie's are used on farms and having a full bushy tail would get in the way. Don't know how true this is but I also heard that at one point the put a tax on all dogs to help pay for one of the old wars, but working dogs were exempt and docking the tails was the indication that they are working dogs. The families that are just going to have them as companions mostly want the tail docked for authentic reasons.

  6. Interesting. I guess it's like circumcision - done when young, for aesthetic reasons, cleanliness.. I really don't agree with cutting of dog's ears though so I'm glad that's not a procedure these puppies have to endure. =)
